The Christmas Card Program: In December, we had made a call out to our Cuba AIDS Project friends worldwide to send Christmas cards to all the HIV/AIDS patients and their families in the province. We received cards and letters from all over the world....the US, Canada, Australia, Europe, South America and even Africa. These cards (over 120 of them) were all hand carried to Cienfuegos and laid in the lap of our Cuba AIDS Project Cuban representative there, Jorge Piñeiro. Jorge, who works strictly on a volunteer basis after having heard about our program there, was responsible for hand delivering these letters all over the province. Unfortunately, Jorge only owns a bicycle!! Well, needless to say, he needed help. When the manager of a local factory heard about all this, he dispatched three trucks complete with drivers and the job was done in just two days. Cienfuegos is a large city of 200,000, but in reality, a small place. Word spread quickly that there was a group in the city willing to help these patients and soon, many, many Cubans stepped forward to ask how they could in some way help also. If there is one fascinating and endearing feature of Cuban society, it is their sense of "community". Throughout the last few centuries, no matter what the political climate, Cubans have always lived by the ideal of helping each other and that is evident moreso today that at any other time.

A Special Night for the HIV/AIDS Patients: Well, the fire of participation spread quickly. By the end of December, I had been notified that "a special night" was planned for the patients to coincide with the Cuba AIDS Project group arrival in early January. A local outdoor venue had donated the place to us for a night; a famous MC had donated his time for the evening to host the festivities; a flamenco group would play gratis as as well as a famous Cienfuegos duo singing old Cuban music; the provinces top models, both male and female would put on a fashion show; and one of Cubas top bands would also be coming from Havana to play!! Food and beverages were donated and the staff of the venue all donated their time and energy to make the night come off without a hitch.
Over 100 people paid an entrance fee that night and we raised over $1000 that night in Cuba. If that's not a miracle, I don't know what is! All the patients were there, and for many it had been the first time out of the house in months. The smiles on their faces that night, knowing that ALL these people were there to help them, was undoubtedly the highlight of the evening. The Cuba AIDS Project was happy to have been the catalyst for such an event where so many could come together to help those less fortunate.

The Cienfuegos HIV/AIDS Group: The HIV/AIDS patients, with our help and support, have come together to form their own support network. Through these funds, and medicines that we bring down on our symposiums, they are able to help each other in ways that were unimaginable in the past. This diverse group of people (homosexual, heterosexual, young, old, male, female) are an inspiration to us and a testament to our mission for the last 9 years in Cuba..... to support those with HIV/AIDS in any way we can to help themselves.
